biolog技术由美国的BIOLOG公司于1989年开发成功，进行95种*碳源的生化反应测试，zui初应用于纯种微生物鉴定，至今已经能够鉴定包括细菌，酵母菌和霉菌在内的2000多种病原微生物和环境微生物。1991年，Garland和Mill开始将这种方法应用于土壤微生物群落的研究。Biolog方法用于环境微生物群落研究，具有以下特点:1·灵敏度高，分辨力强。对多种SCSU的测定可以得到被测微生物群落的代谢特征指纹(metabolic finger-print),分辩微生物群落的微小变化。2·无需分离培养纯种微生物，可zui大限度地保留微生物群落原有的代谢特征。3·测定简便,数据的读取与记录可以由计算机辅助完成。微生物对不同碳源代谢能力的测定在一块微平板上一次完成，效率大大提高。
BIOLOG微平板由对照孔和95孔不同单一碳源孔组成，当接种纯培养的菌液时，其中一些孔的营养物质被利用，使孔中呈现出不同的颜色变化，从而构成该种微生物*的“代谢指纹 (MetabolicFingerprint)，经相应的仪器记录，结果输入BIOLoG配套软件、与标准菌种的数据库进行比较，从而将被测菌种鉴定出来。
