UbcH9 is a SUMO conjugating enzyme that mediates the conjugation of SUMO-1 to a number of proteins including RanGAP1, IκBα and PML. It appears that conjugation of SUMO-1 to IκBβ prevents subsequent ubiquitinylation and thus protects it from proteasomal degradation. Thus, while ubiquitinylation targets proteins for rapid degradation, SUMO-1 modification acts antagonistically to generate proteins resistant to degradation.
