View All» Molecular Weight: 17 kDa View All» Epitope: Phosphorylated Tyr138 View All» Immunogen: KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to mouse phosphorylated Calmodulin at and around Tyr138. View All» Modifications: Phosphorylation View All» Background Information: Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous, calcium-binding protein that can bind to and regulate a multitude of different protein targets, thereby affecting many different cellular functions.CaM mediates processes such as inflammation, metabolism, apoptosis, muscle contraction, intracellular movement, short-term and long-term memory, nerve growth and the immune response. CaM is expressed in many cell types and can have different subcellular locations, including the cytoplasm, within organelles, or associated with the plasma or organelle membranes. Many of the proteins that CaM binds are unable to bind calcium themselves, and as such use CaM as a calcium sensor and signal transducer. CaM undergoes a conformational change upon binding to calcium, which enables it to bind to specific proteins for a specific response. CaM can bind up to four calcium ions, and can undergo post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation and proteolytic cleavage, each of which can potentially modulate its actions. View All» Key Applications: Western Blotting View All» Entrez Gene Summary: Calmodulin is the archetype of the family of calcium-modulated proteins of which nearly 20 members have been found. They are identified by their occurrence in the cytosol or on membranes facing the cytosol and by a high affinity for calcium. Calmodulin contains 149 amino acids and has 4 calcium-binding domains. Its functions include roles in growth and the cell cycle as well as in signal transduction and the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters. View All» UniProt Summary: FUNCTION: Calmodulin mediates the control of a large number of enzymes and other proteins by Ca2+. Among the enzymes to be stimulated by the calmodulin-Ca2+ complex are a number of protein kinases and phosphatases. Together with CEP110 and centrin, is involved in a genetic pathway that regulates the centrosome cycle and progression through cytokinesis.SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with MYO1C By similarity. Interacts with CEP97, CEP110, TTN/titin and SRY.SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Spindle. Note= Distributed throughout the cell during interphase, but during mitosis becomes dramatically localized to the spindle poles and the spindle microtubules. PTM: Ubiquitination results in a strongly decreased activity By similarity.Phosphorylation results in a decreased activity By similarity.MISCELLANEOUS: This protein has four functional calcium-binding sites.SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the calmodulin family.Contains 4 EF-hand domains.Sequence caution The sequence CAA36839.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Erroneous gene model prediction.
