Two alternatively spliced isoforms of L1CAM have been described. The full-length signaling isoform is expressed exclusively in neurons. The second non-neuronal variant lacks a five-residue extracellular sequence and a four residue cytoplasmic sequence that is important in signaling and clathrin-mediated endocytosis.
