In mitotic processes, KIF11 regulates microtubule movement, and is required for bipolar spindle formation and organization, and centrosome migration. Disruption of KIF11 function induces cell-cycle arrest. KIF11 is regulated by CDK1-mediated phosphorylation of its Thr926 residue, which affects its binding to microtubules. KIF11 is also phosphorylated by the Nek6 kinase, which prevents spindle bipolarity. Defects in KIF11 results in microcephaly.
