View All» Background Information: Cathepsin L is a lysosomal and secreted cysteine protease that plays a large role in intracellular and extracellular protein catabolism and turnover. It has a wide range of protein substrates encompassing extracellular, cytoplasmic, and nuclear proteins. It is initially expressed as Procathepsin L (42 kDa) and then is proteolytically processed into a single chain (30 kDa) protease. Further proteolytic processing results in a 2-chain protease (21 kDa). Cathepsin L expression can be induced by many different signaling events, including growth factor and secondary messenger signaling. Large amounts of Cathepsin L are found in many tumor types as well as trnaformed cells in culture. Thus, Cathepsin L may play a role in cell/tumor growth and metastasis.
