View All» Isotype: IgG View All» Background Information: RAX (retina and anterior neural fold homeobox) belongs to the bicoid subfamily of the paired homeobox family and contains one homeobox DNA-binding domain and one OAR domain. Found in the nucleus, RAX plays a critical role in eye formation by regulating the initial specification of retinal cells and their subsequent proliferation. In the early mouse embryo, RAX is expressed in the anterior neural fold, and in the developing ventral forebrain and optic vesicles. Once the optic vesicles form, RAX expression is restricted to the ventral diencephalon and the optic vesicles. At later stages, RAX is found only in the developing retina. After birth, the expression of RAX is restricted to retinal proliferating cells, and expression gradually decreases as proliferation declines. Defects in RAX are the cause of isolated microphthalmia type 3 (MCOP3). Microphthalmia is a clinically heterogeneous disorder of eye formation, ranging from small size of a single eye to complete bilateral absence of ocular tissues.
