Thus, the cell-cell adherens junction is a structure composed of the transmembrane cadherin, which is associated directly with either beta-catenin or plakoglobin, which in turn assoctiates directly with alpha-catenin. alpha-catenin then mediates the interaction between the cadherin-catenin complex and the actin cytoskeleton (Nagafuchi et al. 1994; Shahidul et al. 1996). alpha-catenin has been characterized as a tumor suppressor, suggesting that it may have a regulatory function in regulation to its structural role (Rudiger 1998).
