HDAC1 is part of the core histone deacetylase (HDAC) complex composed of HDAC1, HDAC2, Rbbp4 and Rbbp7, which deacetylates lysines on the core histones. The core complex associates with a wide variety of other proteins to form multiprotein complexes, including the nucleosome remodeling complex, the nurd complex, and the sin3 HDAC complex. HDAC1 also interacts with retinoblastoma tumor-suppressor protein and this complex is a key element in the control of cell proliferation and differentiation.
