It belongs to no known protein family, but is reminiscent of Calmodulin. PIN is 9- to10-kDa in size and has no apparent posttranslational modification. At low concentration it is a monomer, and at high concentration it is a trimer. PIN binds to dimeric neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase (nNOS), separating its oxygenase domains and rendering it inactive.
