It contains a thioredoxin-like redox-sensitive active site motif (CPDC). In its reduced form, the active site cysteine residues reduce protein disulfide. The resulting active site disulfide is subsequently reduced in a reaction catalyzed by the NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase 1. Thioredoxin-like 5 is ubiquitously expressed and acts on protein targets different from that of Thioredoxin-1. The amino acid sequence of human Thioredoxin-like 5 is 80% identical to that of mouse and rat Thioredoxin-like 5.
