Its expression is almost only found in human, mouse and rat endothelial cells and angioblasts. Most likely, Tie-2 regulates the differentiation, proper dispersal, and proliferation of these cells during angiogenesis. Mutations in TEK are a cause of VMCM or dominantly inherited venous malformations which are characterized by serpiginious, dilated veins. Tie-2 can be found in placenta and lung tissue.
