When translation ends upstream from the last exon-exon junction, this triggers NMD to degrade mRNAs containing premature stop codons. In mammalian cells NMD generally requires that translation terminates upstream of a post-splicing exon junction complex (EJC). The subsequent binding of Upf1 to the EJC triggers Upf1 phosphorylation.
