The PP2A enzymes contain core structural (A) and catalytic (C) subunits and variable regulatory B subunits. The B subunits regulate their catalytic activity, as well as dictate substrate specificity and subcellular localization. Recent studies have suggested that B56 epsilon subunits regulate p53-mediated apoptotic pathways, and can induce or suppress apoptosis depending on the cellular context.
