Cyclins associate with cyclin-dependent kinases (cdks), and the association is absolutely required for cdk activity. At the conclusion of the relevant phase of the cell cycle, cyclins are rapidly ubiquitinated and degraded, thus returning cdks to their inactive state. Cyclin A associates with cdk2, and together with cyclin E is involved in the G1/S transition. Cyclin A/cdk2 remains active during S-phase. Cyclin B associates with cdk1/cdc2 to regulate the G2/M boundary. The D-cyclins bind cdk4 and cdk6, and result in Rb phosphorylation. Cyclins function as regulators of CDK kinases. Different cyclins exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns which contribute to the temporal coordination of each mitotic event. This cyclin forms a complex with and functions as a regulatory subunit of CDK2. This cyclin has been shown to specifically interact with CIP/KIP family of CDK inhibitors, and plays a role in cell cycle G1/S transition. The expression of this gene peaks at the G1-S phase and exhibits a pattern of tissue specificity distinct from that of cyclin E1.
