VEMA is thought to be a receptor for progesterone. It is also thought to have a role in axon guidance regulation in the CNS of mammals. This role is inferred by the VEMA sequence containing structural components that are consistent with intracellular membrane association, such as many internalization motifs that are tyrosine-based and a transmembrane domain near the N-terminal region. Significant levels of VEMA expression have been observed in kidney, liver, brain and lung. Lower levels of the antigen have been observed in spleen and testis, with no expression in skeletal muscle and heart.
