SUMO 2/3 differs from other SUMO family members in that it is able to form polysumoylation chains and is mainly observed as free form proteins that readily conjugate under specific stress factors. For example, during mitosis, SUMO 2/3 conjugates topoisomerase II, a modification that is critical to the metaphase-anaphase transition as it is involved in the remodeling of mitotic chromosomal topisomerase II.
