Apoptosis inducing factor (AIF) gene was identified, and its encoded protein was shown to cause chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation, typical hallmarks of apoptisis (Susin et al., 1999). Like the critical molecules, cytochrome c and caspase 9, in apoptosis, AIF localizes in mitochondria.
