This translation initiation factor was purified from rabbit reticulocytes and has been shown to drive binding of initiator methionyl-tRNA (met-tRNAi) to the 40S ribosome in an AUG-dependent manner to form the 43S pre-initiation complex. The alpha subunit of EIF2a acts as the regulatory subunit and can be phosphorylated by related protein kinases upon activation in response to stress.
