The protein, encoded by the IFGN gene, performs immunoregulatory and anti-proliferative functions. It is also a potent activator of macrophages and induces the production of cytokines. Other functions include the up-regulation the expression of class I and class II MHC antigens. Activation by IFN-γ takes place through binding to IFNG receptor I and receptor II, thereby activating the JAK-STAT pathway. IFN-γ is a dimeric protein with subunits of 146 amino acids.
