It is highly expressed during embryonic development and regulates genes involved in neurite growth and survival. Sox11 plays an important role in the formation of sensory neurons and organogenesis. Sox11-deficient mice show defects in multiple organs including the lung, heart, and pancreas. Sox11 also plays a critical role as a tumor suppressor. Epigenetic suppression of the Sox11 gene, primarily through promoter hypermethylation, contributes to various forms of neoplasms.
